Fleet technology company  has released a report indicating that corporations worldwide are preparing for a major shift in the workplace. Despite historically high fuel prices and inflation, and 42% of respondents being concerned about a recession. Fleet managers and drivers who use AI-enabled dashcams may understand the potential the technology has to coach employees. Using the tool to identify trends and driver habits that can negatively impact safety.

In many of the conversations about the move to electric vehicles, the subjects of collaboration and cooperation come up. Those entities working to speed the adoption of electric vehicles say it will take a joint effort between fleets, utilities, charger manufacturers, government agencies, and more.

I suspect they are correct in their assessment. But the reality is collaboration should be a core value of everyone involved in the trucking industry. It should also be critical to how we operate inside our own businesses. Some problems we face are best solved by pooling resources from across the industry.

And I think the trucking industry has a history of working together to solve really tough problems. Many companies already seem to see the writing on the wall asemissions regulations tighten, with most businesses already incorporating electric vehicles into their fleets, and most planning to monetize a coming market that could reward those organizations with sustainability on mind.

Just because pre- and post-trip trucking inspections are common sense doesn’t mean they are common practice. These inspections may signal a larger issue within our industry: business and safety practices are at odds.

For operators  making every minute count is critical to their livelihood, especially under tight deadlines. Even though a typical inspection can take 15 minutes, the issue comes down to time and money, risk and payoff—for companies, as much as drivers. For example, pay-by-the-mile compensation, as opposed to an hourly compensation, has been widely recognized to disincentivize safety protocols, including completing thorough inspections.

The rules and regulations designed to improve safety, instead, cut back on miles or the time drivers have to make those miles. Despite all the local, state, and federal regulations in the trucking industry, workers in transportation and material-moving jobs represent some of the highest fatalities of any occupational group.

If a serious collision occurs that results from a maintenance defect or cargo issue on a commercial vehicle, data from a pre-trip inspection will factor into how much liability operators, vehicle owners and companies face.

Trucking companies are examining their pay structure and technology to promote and incentivize safer driving. Fleets should also provide drivers with better tools to complete their inspections. Without going through a list that guides drivers through the proper safety inspection steps, it is easy to overlook some or all of them.

The decision to own, rent, or leasing trucks is not an all-or-nothing choice. Each option can have a place in your fleet, and you may use all three as trucking transitions to alternative fuels. This is unlikely to change as we move into a future when there will be many more options for powering vehicles.

Given the myriad choices of powertrain options available for all duty cycles—battery-electric, hydrogen fuel cell, hydrogen internal combustion, renewable diesel, biodiesel, compressed natural gas, liquified natural gas, and traditional diesel and gasoline power—it makes a great deal of sense to switch from ownership to leasing.

No one knows with any degree of certainty what the maintenance requirements will be for these new alternative-fuel vehicles, but we do know it’s going to require a different technician skill set to maintain and repair them.

When you opt for full-service leasing, the lessor takes on the responsibility for the maintenance and repair of the asset and you pay a set fee each month. This option also removes the burden of having to find technicians who are properly trained to work on these new vehicles. Given the current technician shortage, finding and training techs can be a time-consuming task. Buying an asset outright might make sense in some scenarios, especially if you plan to keep an asset for an extended period of time.

In addition, if you want to try a new technology before you buy it, a short-term rental makes sense so you can see how the technology performs in your operation. Opting for a short-term rental allows you to check out how manufacturer claims about a product stack up in your real-world operating environment.
